š September 21st is World Alzheimer’s Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness and breaking the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
Here in Canada, more than 771,000 people are living with dementia, and that number is expected to reach nearly 1,000,000 by 2030 and over 1.7 million by 2050. Every day, more than 414 Canadians are newly diagnosed—that’s over 17 people every hour.
Behind each number is a person, a family, and a community learning how to live with the realities of memory loss, communication changes, and evolving daily care needs.
Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia
Dementia is not a single disease, but an umbrella term for conditions affecting memory, thinking, and behaviour. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type, accounting for 60–70% of cases. It is progressive and can profoundly impact independence, relationships, and quality of life.
- Frequent memory lapses
- Difficulty finding words
- Confusion in familiar settings
- Changes in mood or personality
While there is no cure, treatments, therapies, and support services can significantly improve the quality of life.
The Importance of Early Detection and Support
- Access treatment and community resources.
- Plan for care, housing, and finances.
- Ensure their loved one’s voice and choices are respected.
Caregivers—often family members—provide countless hours of support, advocacy, and love. Their role deserves recognition, resources, and respite.
